People in Education

Monday, 9 March 2015

As we believe at Learning Times, learning is the life blood of every great society.
Interestingly, learning rarely happens in vacuum, someone usually has to teach another. This may be through literature, personal contact or as we have now over the internet.
The mighty Alexander was a student of Aristotle.
The cerebral Wole Soyinka, a student of the venerable Oyewole Twins.

It is therefore crucial to inquire about the welfare of these individuals who have committed their lives to the noble of passing on knowledge.
In our schools today, how well are the staff taken care of i.e teaching and non-teaching?
How humane are the people policies in our educational institutions?
Does their take home pay really "take them home"?
To paraphrase David Packard's saying, "No organization can rise above the quality of her people".

Someone said "when half baked teachers train quarter baked learners".
Hence our institutions must always retain the brightest minds with impeccable character.
But economics is perhaps at play here too, as there is demand for these minds far and beyond the academia.
A young lady once quipped "why will I work in the school when a Consumer Goods job gives me better working conditions?".
Sadly, she reflects the opinion of many a young person out there.

It is high time we all make the Education Industry a place to be for the best hands and minds.
Our future as a society depends on it.
